It is possible to withdraw a proposal at any point prior to the completion of the communication of its acceptance as against the proposer, but this is not possible after the fact. It is possible to revoke an acceptance at any point until the discussion of the consent concludes as against the taker, but it is not possible to rescind an acceptance after it has been given.

If an offer has been made, the party making the offer retains the ability to rescind it up until the point where the offeree formally accepts the offer. If the offeree is informed of the revocation before they make their decision to accept the offer, then the revocation is considered to have fulfilled its purpose as a formal, legally verifiable notice that the offer has been withdrawn. This is supported by the decision in the case of Byrne v. Van Tienhoven, which established that in order for an offer to be withdrawn through telegram, the telegram must first be received after the bid is taken up. The court decision known as Dickinson v.
